Can You Reheat Sausages

Sausages can be reheated without much complication if stored correctly. However, sausages must be reheated thoroughly until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F. Anything lower than this could lead to food poisoning. You can consider using several methods such as the microwave, oven, pan, or even an air fryer. The sausages should be steaming hot when served, especially in the center. Cold centers result from uneven heating, which can ruin the taste.

The microwave is simple, quick, and effective. The method provides a stress-free option to reheat a whole platter of sausages for your meal. The sausages can easily be combined with numerous breakfast items and reheated simultaneously. The main disadvantage of this method is that it can dry out sausages if not handled correctly.

The oven is an effective way to reheat sausages, although it takes longer than other methods. Using this option, you can reheat a large amount of sausage, which will come out crispy with a flavorful taste. At a temperature of 350°F, you can thoroughly reheat your sausages in 15 minutes. All you need is some aluminum foil to help ensure even reheating.

Reheating sausages in a pan is best for cooked sausages and frozen ones. It revitalizes and can bring dry sausages back to tasting juicy again. The method does require more time, but it’s an opportunity to remake the sausages with new ingredients such as butter, olive oil, and other spices. When using a skillet to reheat, the sausages will come out steaming soft in the center with a crispy outside.

Lastly, Air fryers are a popular kitchen appliance that can reheat sausages quickly from all angles using hot air. It provides crispy and steamy sausages but takes longer and is more labor-intensive than the alternatives. At a temperature of 400°F, you should have thoroughly reheated sausages in 10 minutes with this method.

Steps to Reheating Sausages Using a Microwave

  1. You will need a microwave-safe plate or dish to reheat the sausages.
  2. Place the sausages in the middle of the plate and prick them with a fork. These holes are helpful for even reheating as the air can travel through the inside of the sausages.
  3. Cover the top of the sausages with a moist paper towel to ensure sufficient moisture.
  4. Place the microwave on low heat and allow them to reheat for about 30-60 seconds.
  5. Stop the microwave in intervals to check and flip over the sausages.
  6. Every microwave has a different wattage. Therefore, it is essential to adjust the times accordingly. A general rule is to ensure the center of the sausage is steaming hot before serving.
  7. If the sausages are frozen, you will need to use the “defrost” setting on the microwave. This will save you from physically defrosting the sausages.
  8. Thinner sausages require less time to reheat.

Steps to Reheat Sausages in the oven

  1. Preheat the oven to 325-350° F.
  2. Lace the oven tray with a baking sheet or piece of parchment paper.
  3. Spray the baking sheet with a light coating of oily non-stick spray.
  4. Evenly place the sausages on the baking sheet. Avoid touching each other because this causes excess moisture and can make the sausages soggy in the center.
  5. Cover the sausages in the oven tray with aluminum foil and place the sausages in the oven.
  6. Allow them to reheat for 15 minutes.
  7. Stop the sausages halfway through to flip them over.
  8. When complete, you can use a food thermometer to gauge how hot the sausages are. They should have an internal temperature of 165°F before being served.
  9. Let them cool slightly before serving to avoid burning your mouth.

Reheating Sausages in a Skillet

  1. Briefly defrost your sausages outside the freezer until there is no ice on them.
  2. Place the stovetop on medium heat.
  3. Lightly coat the skillet with olive oil to prevent the sausages from burning.
  4. When the pan has preheated, add the sausages and leave uncovered so you can stir.
  5. As the sausages begin to brown on one side, you can use tongs to turn them over.
  6. Each side of the sausage should reheat for 4 minutes.
  7. The sausages should reheat evenly until both sides have turned golden brown.
  8. You can then reduce the heat and add extra fresh ingredients like herbs, tomatoes, or spices and serve.

Steps to Reheating Sausages with An Air Fryer

  1. Set the air fryer to 400°F and allow it to preheat for 3 minutes.
  2. Place the sausages in the basket but ensure they are well spaced out. If they are touching, they will likely come out limp in the middle.
  3. Leave the sausages to reheat for 10 minutes.
  4. Serve when the sausages have a crispy outside.

Can I Eat Sausage Cold?

Cold sausages are much less delicious than their warm/hot alternatives; however, they are safe. If the sausages have been pre-cooked, they should be safe to consume cold. The only reason not to eat cold sausage is if it wasn’t stored properly. Cold sausage kept out of the fridge is not safe to consume after two hours. Consuming poorly stored sausage will cause the risk of food poisoning.
